Jo Sallins The Pianist "Music Review" By Joel Stonington February 2, 2005 Edition of The Berkshire Eagle
Five others brought their skill to the stage, all with their own flourishes.
In the first song, "Momentos," Jeff Holmes played the piano and soloed on his trumpet. And during "Rumba en La," bassist Jo Sallins improvised on his bass with one hand and played the djembe with his other.
For the next song, "Piano Dance" Sallins played a mixture of Latin beats and jazz flourishes on the piano.
Not many musicians play one instrument as well as these men played two or three.
"Piano Dance" was one of the more exciting numbers of the night, with just Sallins, Arrubla, and Omar Ledezma playing rhythm. Sallins' piano playing built an extraordinary amount of tension as he played the high notes over and over, very nearly daring Ines to keep up. And, of course, she did (or maybe he was keeping up with her), all the while giving that look to the audience, throwing her head back, swirling her hands like butterflies or bumble bees. She spun around, snapped her fingers, and raised her eyebrows.
A standing ovation at the end drew everyone back onto the stage.
